Set up in 2001, the .NAME extension is the only one meant for personal sites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. Initially, just third-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to order john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired third-level domain names remained functional.
