There are numerous ways to point a domain to a different domain or subdomain and one of them is by creating a CNAME record. When you own a domain name and you've set up a website using some online service which supplies you with a service subdomain, you can easily link the two by creating a CNAME record for your-domain.com that redirects to subdomain.provider.com. What you'll achieve as a result is that www.your-domain.com is going to be in the browser address bar while it opens the already mentioned Internet site from the servers of the third-party company. It is very important to know that if you set up a CNAME record, any other records your domain name may have will stop working, so you cannot have both a CNAME record pointing to one provider and functioning e-mail address with another. The CNAME record is always an alpha string, not a number, and frequently more configuration may be necessary with the other provider.

CNAME Records in Cloud Hosting

Setting up a CNAME record through our cloud plans is really easy. Our in-house built Hepsia CP includes a section dedicated to the DNS records of your domains, so you can create a new CNAME record for any domain or subdomain hosted inside your account in only a few easy steps. There is also a video tutorial within the same section where you can see the process first-hand. This feature gives you a number of possibilities - if you set up a company website on our end, as an illustration, the staff can use their emails with the company domain address, not with the address of our mail server. If you decide to create an Internet site using a different provider which offers online web design services, you can easily redirect a domain address hosted here and use it for the website. Last, but not least, if you have an on-line store and you have a billing system for http://your-domain.com and/or an SSL certificate, you can create a CNAME record for the www subdomain and forward it to the main domain, so all your clients are going to be forwarded to a secure URL.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

Managing DNS records usually seems a difficult task to the people with less experience, but the Hepsia hosting Control Panel, which comes with every single semi-dedicated plan that we provide, is extremely simple to use. If you would like to set up a CNAME record for any purpose, all that you need to do will be to select the domain name or subdomain that you need, pick the type of record, that will be CNAME in this case, then type the value i.e. the domain address or subdomain you are forwarding to. The procedure is quite easy and you can create the record in the DNS Records section of the CP. Within the hour the new record is going to be 100 % active and within a couple of hours it will propagate all over the world. If you are not sure what you have to do, we've prepared a detailed help article and a short video tutorial on how to go about creating a CNAME record and they are both situated in that same section of Hepsia. Needless to say, you can also get in touch with us for help at any time.
